As was the case with the Channel Islands VAT abuse retailers have been reluctant to discuss the issue of the abuse of the UK's £135 de minimis duty and VAT exemption for fear of pointing consumers to their competitors i.e. SHEIN, TEMU and others. It was refreshing therefore to see Julian Dunkerton the CEO of clothing retailer Superdry stick his head above the parapet to complain about this very issue on the BBC today. It was all the more timely given that last week Croner-i Tax Weekly published a comprehensive piece that I wrote for them detailing with all the issues surrounding this problem along with potential solutions. Editor in Chief Glyn Fullelove has kindly made my piece available on Linked in and I understand that it has had a few thousand views which is gratifying to know. You can also find a PDF of the article on the link below.
This is an important issue and given the state of Government finances it would seem to me to be a no brainer in terms of tax revenue.
